The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday directed universities and higher education institutions across the nation to observe September 29 as “Surgical strike day”. The government has said it will celebrate on that day the second anniversary of its “surgical strikes” against Pakistan.

In a letter to vice chancellors the universities body recommended that institutions ask students to “pledge their support” for the armed forces through letters and cards, which the government will use for publicity. The letter further reads “A multimedia exhibition will be organised around India Gate on September 29. Similar exhibitions may be organised in states, union territories, important towns and cantonments across the country. The institutions should encourage students and faculty members to visit these exhibitions”.

The collages and universities are also asked to invite ex-serviceman on September 19 to celebrate this day. The students are also advised to send thank you letters to the soldiers in order to thank them for protecting us.
