Vodafone, the leading telecom company, has appealed to the government to reduce the interest on spectrum charges and to increase the time for its payment.

At the same time, the company expressed deep concern over the reduction in the mobile termination fee (MTC) for the second company call and said that this could affect services in rural areas. Vittorio Colao, Chief Executive Officer of UK Vodafone Group, said this in a letter to telecom minister Manoj Sinha.

"We hope that the Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) will recommend reducing the interest rate on the delayed payment of spectrum to 6.25%, which is conducive to economic trends and also to increase the period of group payment," he wrote in a letter.

It is noteworthy that the old telecom companies with the burden of heavy debt should increase the tenure of the spectrum fee from 10 to 16 years.

Vodafone has expressed concern over the possibility of cut in MTC, "We see a serious danger from seeing this report that the telecom regulator is considering reducing MTC and that too at a time when this industry is in big trouble.

"Vodafone says that with the reduction of MTC, there is a danger of many such mobile towers in rural areas which are already in losses. If this happens then some part of the population will be deprived of network coverage."
