New Delhi [India], Jan 02 (NT): The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 in the hunt for to criminalize instant divorce among Muslim communities, triple talaq, is to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Last week amid the hue and cry of lawmakers, This Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with most of the leading parties in the Opposition, together with the Congress, voting in favor, but with the admonition. It was passed after the House discarded a set of amendments moved by varied Opposition members.

The Govt. of Centre termed the decision in favor of to pass Bill on triple talaq as "historic" and expressed assurance that it would be also passed in Rajya Sabha.

The controversial bill had met with mixed reaction from all political parties when it was presented in the lower house.

As Congress extended its support, it also recommended that there were firm lacunae in the Bill that looked-for to be fixed before being put into practice.

This Bill, if acts out, will make triple talaq a criminal offense which proposes a three-year imprison for a Muslim man who divorces his spouse in any form of spoken, written or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp. (NT)
