Mumbai: On Tuesday a 30-year old man convicted for brutally raping a five-year-old girl in 2014. A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Dindoshi sentenced Ali Mohammed Shaikh to life imprisonment for kidnapping the girl, raping her and brutally injuring her by inserting a broom into her private part.

According to a source report, one morning in August 2014, the girl's mother and grandmother found the child dragging herself outside a chawl nearby a footpath in Kandvli where they lived. The girl's lower body parts were soaked in blood and a broom was inserted in her private part. The girl was immediately shifted to a hospital where she was treated for six months. However an FIR was registered at Kandivli police station. Reportedly, Shaikh was arrested 11 days after the crime happened on the basis of CCTV camera footage of the locality. The accused's wife and the survivor's mother had helped the police identify him. The girl's mother told the court that Shaikh had introduced himself as Anand to the girl's mother and tried to pursue her.

As many as 11 witnesses were produced before the court to give their statements. The doctor who treated the girl told the court that a 90-centimetre broom had been pushed 25 centimetre into the girl's body. The survivor's anklet which was recovered outside the house and bloodstains in the verandah strengthened the case against Shaikh. The court convicted Shaikh and sentenced him to life imprisonment. It also ordered a compensation of Rs 6,000 to the survivor.
