Washington: A man wanted for crimes connected to the Jan. 6, 2021 uprising at the US Capitol who was armed with explosives and weapons was detained on Thursday in the Washington neighbourhood where former President Barack Obama lives, according to law enforcement officials.

A few blocks from the former president's house, Taylor Taranto, 37, was spotted by law enforcement and fled while being pursued by US Secret Service agents. According to two law enforcement officials, Taranto is wanted on insurrection-related charges. The officials spoke to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to discuss an active case in public.

They claimed Taranto had also threatened a well-known individual on social media. Despite not having built an explosive device, he was discovered to have weapons and the materials needed to make one.

Nobody was hurt. It was unclear if the Obamas were present when he was taken into custody.

On suspicion of fleeing justice, Taranto was detained by the Metropolitan Police. After searching Taranto's van for explosives, the explosives team concluded there were none present.

It is unclear exactly what Taranto is charged with during the riot, in which supporters of then-President Donald Trump broke Capitol building windows and assaulted and injured police officers in an effort to rig the 2020 presidential election.

Over 550 riot defendants have received sentences, and more than half of them have received prison terms ranging from six days to 18 years.
