Pune: A recent incident came into light, despite various provisions against sexual harassment in the workplace, cases involving the same keep surfacing all across the country. The police booked four men of a multinational company for sexually harassing their colleague. The accused were booked by the Pimpri Chinchwad police. The victim was allegedly harassed by four men including a team leader and a manager. The 23-year-old victim lodged a complaint at the Hinjewadi police station after the alleged incident.

According to the source report, the accused harassed the victim between November 2017 and 2018. There was a significant change in the behaviour of the accused after they got to know that the victim belonged to a backward class. In her complaint, the victim alleged that her colleagues refused to give her work and condescended her. The victim was also not included in the team by her colleagues. The victim added that one of the accused touched her inappropriately.
It is worth mentioning here that , Sub-inspector, Sapna Devtale said that the victim had stopped going to the office because of these incidents. Though the accused have not been arrested yet, they have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and Sections 3(1)(w)(i) and 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

According to the records of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 965 cases of sexual harassment were reported all across the country in 2018. The NCRB had been collecting data since 2014 regarding all the cases of sexual harassment of women at the workplace. The cases were being filed under Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
