KINSHASA: A freight train crash in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) killed at least 75 people and injured 125 others, according to local authorities.

Despite the fact that the accident occurred on March 11, the death toll was only certified by the National Railway Company of Congo (SNCC) on Sunday, according to reports..

The 15-wagon train derailed in the Lubudi region of Lualaba province, according to Fabien Mutomb, Director General of the SNCC. The train lost control before some waggons ended up in a ravine owing to a locomotive traction failure, according to the Ministry of Communication and Media, without providing further specifics.

Due to the poor state of locomotives and deteriorated rails, train accidents are common in this region of the country.
