Hyderabad: On Sunday night, a day after he was remanded to judicial custody for sexually abusing a minor girl, a school teacher in Hyderabad committed suicide inside his cell at the Cherlapally jail custody. The accused, 21-year-old Ramavath Chander was found hanging by the toilet ventilator by fellow inmates. His body was discovered around 11.30 pm, an official deployed at the jail told media outlets.

Based on a complaint by the survivor's kin, police arrested Chander for sexually abusing the minor. He was booked under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Chander had arrived at the Cherlapally Jail on Saturday, a day before he decided to take his own life.

Here it is to be noted that the announcement regarding Chander's death was made by Director General of Prisons VK Singh who told media personnel that the inmate hung himself with a blanket. Other inmates alerted jail authorities and Chander was shifted to a hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival. The Kushaiguda police were later informed about the incident which occurred at Manasa Block. Director General (Prisons) further said that the cause behind Chander's suicide is still unknown since no suicide note was recovered from his cell. A case in this regard has been registered under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) at the Kushaiguda police station.

In August of last year, a warden of the Cherlapally jail went missing after sending a suicide note and video shot by himself to higher authorities. In the note, K Srinivas had alleged harassment at the hands of higher authorities. In fact, the warden had held the superintendent responsible for his death. Despite repeated search operations, Srinivas was nowhere to be traced. He had in his letter urged the Chief Minister and the Home Minister to aid his wife and children.
