Dharmapuri: In Dharmapuri district, a 16-year-old girl's parents have been arrested by the police  for trying to kill their daughter by giving her poison, after she refused to a marriage proposal. Prabha, 16 (name changed), of Palacode area near Magendramangalam, Dharmapuri studies in a school there. Prabha has three more sisters and with so many female children, the parents were keen to get her married and were making arrangements. But Prabha wanted to continue her studies and had been turning down the idea of getting married.

However, the parents have been threatening her that she has to accept the proposal and get married. They had even beaten her on this issue. But since she wouldn’t budge, they mixed poison in the food she carried as lunch to the school.

Prabha’s younger sister warned her on the way to school that “our parents have mixed some poison in your food so don’t eat it”. Shocked at this, Prabha went straight to the Magendramangalam police station carrying the contaminated food and explained her predicament and filed a complaint. Following this, an enquiry was carried on by enquiries by the Child Welfare Organisation and the police and it was confirmed that poison was mixed in the food. Later, the police arrested the girl’s father and mother.
