New Delhi: The central government is going to take an important step to raise funds necessary for the development of the country's airports. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned to sell 759 acres of land near eight major airports in the country. Private sector businesses will be able to build hotels, warehouses and restaurants etc. on these lands. The money from the sale of land will be used to develop the infrastructure of the airport.

A senior AAI official said that it has been decided to sell the land around the airports for development around the city. All these lands are in the vicinity of the respective airports. Selling it will increase the authority's non-traffic revenue. The money received from the sale of land will be spent on the development of airport facilities in cities deprived of air facilities and cities with fewer facilities. AAI, functioning under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, operates 129 airports across the country.

94 airports are in deficit in 2017--18. The above lands will be given to a company or organization on lease for 25 to 30 years. They will be charged annually. Last year, the government decided to privatize Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati airports. These six airports have been awarded to the Adani Group in February this year for the development, operation and management of PPP model (private-public partnership).
