Chandigarh: Punjab's youth are facing a dire situation as synthetic drugs continue to claim lives. The proliferation of cheap chemicals has led to devastating consequences, prompting calls for alternative solutions to combat addiction. In a surprising turn of events, members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Punjab Assembly have advocated for the cultivation of opium and poppy as a potential remedy.

During the budget session of the Punjab Assembly, AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Mathan Majra raised the issue, questioning Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian about the government's stance on expanding opium-poppy cultivation in the state as a means to curb the use of synthetic drugs.

Highlighting the detrimental impact of drugs like smack and tablets on Punjab's youth, Majra emphasized the urgent need for action. The proliferation of addiction has led to the establishment of 136 de-addiction centers in Punjab, with alarming statistics revealing a rising death toll attributed to synthetic drug abuse.

Majra underscored the historical use of traditional medicines like opium and poppy husk, noting their comparatively less harmful effects compared to synthetic drugs. Drawing parallels with opium cultivation in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Majra argued that embracing this practice in Punjab could bolster state revenue while addressing addiction issues.

Even suggesting the establishment of shops to provide regulated access to opium and poppy, Majra urged the government to consider all available options to safeguard Punjab's youth. However, Agriculture Minister Khudian indicated that there were no immediate plans for opium cultivation in Punjab.

Responding to the seriousness of the matter, the Assembly Speaker called for a comprehensive explanation from the government regarding the cessation of opium and poppy cultivation, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making in addressing the state's drug crisis.
