Amritsar: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has performed brilliantly in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections held ahead of Punjab assembly elections. Arvind Kejriwal's candidate has defeated the mayor. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is completely on the backfoot in this election. According to the results and lead so far, Kejriwal's party AAP has won 14 seats. While 10 seats have come in BJP's account.

The Congress has to settle for only 5 seats and the Shiromani Akali Dal has won one seat. From Ward 18, AAP candidate Taruna Mehta has won by defeating BJP's sitting councilor Sunita Dhawan. On the other hand, AAP's Anju Katyal has defeated BJP's current councilor Heera Negi from Ward 22. On the performance of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, AAP leader Raghav Chadha said that it is a victory for Kejriwal's model of governance as people have been yearning for change since years.

As per the results declared so far, BJP's sitting Mayor Vikant Sharma has been defeated by AAP candidate Damanpreet Singh. Polling was held for 35 wards in Chandigarh on Friday. Earlier there were only 26 wards, which has been increased to 35 this time. This time 60.45 percent of people have exercised their franchise.
