AAP plays "villain" for Congress in Gujarat as BJP scripts massive win

GANDHINAGAR: As the Bharatiya Janata Party heads for a landslide victory in Gujarat Assembly elections almost wiping out the opposition, the one striking element emerging was whether the Aam Aadmi Party played the villain for the Congress.

According to the Election Commission of India's data, the BJP has won 42 seats and was leading on 115 seats at 3 pm  The Congress has won three seats and was leading in 13, which had a 13-seat advantage. Independents were ahead on three seats, the AAP was in the lead on five, and the SP was in the lead on one.

Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister, received 1,98,272 votes, while the Congress candidate received 19,911 votes as of the time this report was filed. Shankar Chaudhary and Kumar Kanani were two more BJP candidates that prevailed in the elections (Kanani defeated AAP leader Alpesh Kathiriya). Alpesh Thakor and Hardik Patel of the BJP were in the lead in the counting.

Arjun Modhwadia of the Congress defeated Babu Bokhiria of the BJP to win the Porbandar seat by a margin of 8,000 votes. Mahendrabhai Bhabhor, a BJP candidate, defeated Congress candidate Chandrika Baria in the election. Shailesh Bhabhor of the AAP received 28,574 votes, compared to Bhabhor's 60,021 votes and the 32,965 votes received by the Congress candidate.

Gyasuddin Shaikh, another candidate for the Congress, lost the Dariyapur constituency after AAP and AIMIM split the vote. He received 55,847 votes, compared to Kaushik Jain of the BJP receiving 61,090, Taj Mohammad of the AAP receiving 4,164, and the candidate of the AIMIM receiving 1,771.
