Delhi Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi was deeply moved as the Supreme Court granted bail to her colleague Manish Sisodia on August 9. Sisodia, who had been detained for 17 months, was a key figure in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Atishi expressed her immense relief and gratitude for the ruling, emphasizing that this decision represents a victory for truth and recognizes Sisodia's contributions to Delhi's education system.

"Today, truth has prevailed, and the students of Delhi have triumphed," Atishi said, visibly emotional. "He was imprisoned for improving education for underprivileged children."

AAP MP Sanjay Singh also celebrated the Supreme Court's decision, viewing it as a major win for the party. He criticized the central government for allegedly targeting Sisodia and other AAP leaders unfairly.

"This is a win for truth," Singh declared. "The case lacked evidence. Our leaders were wrongfully jailed. Manish Sisodia was in prison for 17 months... I am grateful to the Supreme Court for delivering justice in favor of AAP. We hope for the release of Arvind Kejriwal and Satyendra Jain soon. This is a blow to the central government's autocratic stance."

Singh highlighted the relief the ruling brings to the party and its supporters. He questioned the rationale behind Sisodia's long detention, pointing out that no incriminating evidence was discovered at Sisodia’s residence.

In its decision, the Supreme Court emphasized that it would be a "travesty of justice" to send Sisodia back to trial without granting bail. Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, who delivered the verdict after reserving their judgment on August 6, noted Sisodia's prolonged detention despite the trial not having commenced.

Sisodia, former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, had requested bail on the grounds of the trial delay. The CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED), investigating the alleged corruption and money laundering related to the Delhi excise policy scam, opposed the bail plea.

Originally arrested by the CBI on February 26, 2023, for alleged excise policy irregularities, Sisodia was subsequently detained by the ED on March 9, 2023, over money laundering charges. The Supreme Court's decision is a pivotal moment for both Sisodia and the Aam Aadmi Party.
