IMPHAL: Manipur's political scene heated up as several state MLAs recently passed a resolution demanding strong action and specific changes. Amid the ongoing tensions and the National People's Party (NPP) withdrawing its support from the current government led by Biren Singh, the resolution has sparked significant attention.
The key demands include a review of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and swift action against Kuki militants, with a deadline of seven days. This follows recent tragic incidents, including the deaths of six individuals, among them women and children, in Jiribam. The MLAs have called for a mass operation targeting the militants allegedly responsible for these killings.
The resolution also urges the transfer of three critical cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). These cases involve the burning death of a woman, the killing of six civilians, and the death of a woman farmer. Additionally, the MLAs want the Kuki militants declared an "unlawful organization" within the one-week timeframe.
"If these resolutions are not implemented within the specified period, all NDA legislators will consult with the state's residents to decide on future actions," stated a document released by the Chief Minister's Secretariat. It assured that both the central and state governments would take measures to restore peace and stability in Manipur.
During the meeting, the MLAs strongly condemned recent violent acts against them, including assaults and property destruction. They emphasized that those involved in looting and damaging property would face legal action based on findings from a High-Powered Committee.
Meanwhile, NPP National Vice President Yumnam Joykumar expressed deep concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation. He criticized the Manipur government for ignoring the NPP’s recommendations, highlighting a failure to ensure public safety. Joykumar also stressed the need for confidence-building efforts and suggested providing permanent housing for displaced citizens. He called for a neutral administration to help restore peace in the region.
In a related development, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of internet and mobile data services across several districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, and Churachandpur. This extension will last until 5:15 PM on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
