Kolkata: After waiting for almost a month and a half, Congress on Wednesday made Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary the President of West Bengal Congress Committee. The post of Congress state president in West Bengal was vacant for the last one and a half months. Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary has also held this position before. In a letter issued by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, it has been said that Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has handed over the command of West Bengal Congress Committee to Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary with immediate effect.

Congress state president Somen Mitra passed away on 30 July. Since his death, the post of Congress President in Bengal was vacant. Before Somen, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary was the head of the Bengal Congress. Recently, Leader of Opposition in Bengal Assembly Abdul Mannan had raised the demand to make Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary the state unit president. In this regard, Mannan had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi and said that Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary should be appointed as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha and also be appointed as the President of Bengal.

He had said in his letter that Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary has full potential to lead the party to fight and defeat both the BJP and Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal assembly elections. However, he also said that there are many names in the race to become Congress state president, but Adhir Ranjan would be the best option to strengthen the Left-Congress alliance and defeat BJP and TMC.
