Surat: Following the recent controversy surrounding Namaz in the hostel of Gujarat University, action has been taken against seven foreign students. These students have been expelled for their illegal stay and are now categorized as alumni. Gujarat University has arranged for their return to their respective countries after notifying the Afghanistan Consulate.

The Afghanistan Consulate has instructed the students to return home after completing all necessary formalities, including exams. Out of the total 150 foreign students studying at Gujarat University, these seven individuals faced expulsion due to issues related to documentation and residency in the university's hostel.

Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta emphasized that all foreign students at the university receive proper care. However, the seven students in question had been attempting to prolong their stay in the hostel using various justifications. As per regulations, former students cannot continue residing in the university's hostel, leading to the decision for their repatriation, duly communicated to their Consulate.

Last month, an incident of assault on foreign students for offering Namaz within the hostel premises came to light at Gujarat University. In response, the state government directed officials to take stringent action. Police Commissioner revealed that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over Namaz. Around 75 foreign students residing in A block were interrupted during their evening prayers by a group of 25 outsiders, leading to a confrontation resulting in vandalism. During Taraweeh prayers in A block, three students from B block initially raised objections, but the situation escalated when a larger crowd intervened and instigated violence.
