New Delhi: Afghans living in India are deeply concerned after the Taliban captured Afghanistan. For the past one week, they have been visiting different offices and embassies. They have a double challenge. On the one hand, the situation in Afghanistan is very alarming, their visit is not without danger. On the other hand, in India, they are worried about the Citizenship Act (CAA), if CAA applies, they will not be able to get citizenship. More than 21,000 Afghan refugees living in the country will face a crisis.

On Monday, hundreds of Afghans demonstrated in front of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Delhi and demanded a refugee card to get citizenship from other countries. Behishta, a resident of Kabul, Afghanistan, has been living in India for the past five years. At the age of 7, he had to leave his country and come to India with his Ammi-Abba. She currently lives in the Afghan settlement of Delhi. His father has a junk shop. In front of the UNHCR office, Behishta is chanting 'We want future, we want life'. Behishta says she is not getting admission to school because she does not have a refugee card. He mailed UNHCR a lot about it, but there was no response.

On the question of returning to Afghanistan, Behishta says that the situation is very bad there. We girls have been subjected to a lot of atrocities, but we expect India. I also want to grow up to be a doctor-engineer. I sincerely hope that I can do it, but we need help. If we don't get a refugee card here, we should be settled in another country. We have not been able to pay the rent for three months, we have also got food. Ahmed Zia Ghani, India's head of the Afghan Refugee Organization, points out that there are about 21,000 Afghan refugees living here. Most of them live in Delhi. Apart from Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune also have a large number. Out of these 21,000 refugees, only 7,000 are UNHCR cardholders. The rest of the people have only blue cards, which are of no importance.
