KABUL: The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a statement calling on all parties involved in the recent tensions in Ukraine to exercise moderation, stating that all sides must refrain from taking stances that could escalate violence.
According to reports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also encouraged the parties concerned to consider the safety of Afghan refugees and students in Ukraine on Friday.
Russian troops started a full-scale invasion on Ukraine on Thursday, only hours after President Vladimir Putin stated that he had ordered a military action in the country. Several Ukrainian cities have been targeted by Russian soldiers.
"In keeping with its impartial foreign policy, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan urges on both parties of the dispute to resolve the situation via dialogue and peaceful methods," the statement added.
According to analysts, the issue of Ukraine will divert international attention away from the ongoing catastrophe in Afghanistan.
"The situation in Ukraine has drew the attention of the entire world. To keep Afghanistan's relations with the rest of the world on track, the Islamic Emirate should aim to increase its overseas travels "Maiwand Babakarkhail, a political expert, echoed this sentiment.
According to data, Ukraine is home to over 50,000 refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Bangladesh. Afghans make up about 20,000 of them.
