APJ Abdul Kalam's Question- What Will Be the Proof That Chandrayaan-1 Reached the Moon?

The wait for the landing of Chandrayaan-3 is nearly over. The Indian Space Research Organization, also known as ISRO, has indicated the possibility of Chandrayaan 3 landing on the lunar surface around 6 pm on August 23. Meanwhile, discussing India's first moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, is also of significance. At that time, debates arose regarding how to prove Chandrayaan-1's successful moon landing. Interestingly, then-President APJ Abdul Kalam was actively involved in this discussion.

Back in 2008, India's inaugural moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, was primarily an orbiter. During the preparation phase of the spacecraft, former President APJ Abdul Kalam visited the ISRO office. A media report quoted former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair, stating that during this visit, Kalam posed a pivotal question to the scientists—what evidence Chandrayaan-1 would carry to substantiate its successful arrival on the moon.

Allegedly, the scientists responded that the spacecraft would capture photographs of the lunar surface. However, this explanation didn't satisfy Kalam. He proposed that the spacecraft should carry an instrument that could be deployed onto the lunar surface. ISRO then embraced Kalam's suggestion and incorporated modifications into the vehicle's design. As a result, the Moon Impact Probe successfully reached the lunar surface, marking the first Indian object to land on the Moon.

Story of Chandrayaan-1:
India's maiden lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, was launched from Sriharikota on October 22, 2008. The spacecraft orbited approximately 100 km above the lunar surface, conducting chemical, mineralogical, and photogeologic mapping. The mission featured 11 instruments developed by India, the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, and Bulgaria. Following the accomplishment of all critical mission objectives, the orbit was raised to 200 km in May 2009. ISRO lost communication with the spacecraft on August 29, 2009.
