A recent study has given an important warning about AI (Artificial Intelligence) chatbots. According to the study, patients should not rely on AI chatbots to get information about medicines, as they do not always provide accurate and safe information. During this study, researchers from Belgium and Germany found that many answers given by chatbots can be wrong or harmful.

Advice not to trust AI chatbots

This research was published in the journal BMJ Quality and Safety. It was told that the answers given by AI chatbots can sometimes be difficult to understand, and may require a high level of education. The advent of AI-powered chatbots in 2023 changed the search engine, and they provided a new interactive experience with detailed answers. However, experts say that these chatbots may fail to provide accurate information.

Opinion of experts

The team from Germany's Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg said that chatbots are based on large datasets available on the Internet and can answer health-related questions. But, their information can sometimes be wrong and this can prove harmful for patients. Under this study, researchers asked a chatbot named Bing Copilot questions about the 50 most prescribed medicines in the US. Then they assessed the accuracy and ease of understanding of the answers given by the chatbot.

Percentage of wrong answers

The study found that only half of the answers to the questions were completely accurate. In addition, 26 percent of the answers given by the chatbot did not match the reference data, and in 3 percent of cases the answers were completely wrong. Of these answers, 42 percent could have caused moderate or mild harm to the patient, while 22 percent of cases had the potential to cause serious harm. Researchers believe that a major problem is that chatbots are unable to understand the real purpose behind the patient's questions. Therefore, even though AI chatbots can provide a lot of information, it is still important for patients to consult their doctor or health specialist.

The researchers said that despite the capabilities of chatbots, it is always essential that patients consult their doctor for any health-related information. It is not safe to completely rely on information from chatbots.
