In a recent development, AIIMS-Delhi has announced the cancellation of the mock National Exit Test (NExT) scheduled for July 28. The decision comes after the National Medical Commission (NMC) deferred the NExT examination for final year MBBS students of the 2019 batch.

According to a notice issued by AIIMS, the refund process for registration fees of candidates who had applied for the mock test has already been initiated.

The NMC, on July 13, stated that the NExT exam has been postponed until further directions are received from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The NExT exam serves as a crucial certification for determining the eligibility of medical graduates to practice the modern system of medicine in India, functioning as a licentiate examination.

Additionally, it plays a significant role in establishing eligibility and ranking for admission to postgraduate medical education in the country, serving as an entrance examination for various broad medical specialities.

Referring to the notice dated June 26, 2023, AIIMS confirmed that online applications were invited from June 28 for the mock/practice National Exit Test (NExT) on behalf of the National Medical Commission, specifically targeting final year students pursuing MBBS courses in India. However, based on the communication received from the NMC and the decision of the competent authority, it has been decided to cancel the mock/practice test of NExT scheduled for July 28, 2023.

As per the NExT Regulations 2023, the examination will be conducted in two phases, with NExT Step 1 and NExT Step 2 examinations taking place twice a year.

Last year, in September, the government invoked the provisions of the NMC Act, extending the time limit for conducting the NExT exam until September 2024.

According to the NMC Act, the commission is required to conduct the common final-year undergraduate medical examination NExT, as specified by regulations, within three years of the Act coming into force. The Act came into effect in September 2020.
