Indian Air Force Day, celebrated annually on October 8, honours the brave pilots and personnel of the Indian Air Force (IAF) who tirelessly safeguard India’s airspace. The IAF, formed on October 8, 1932, marks its 92nd anniversary this year. As one of the most formidable air forces in the world, the IAF has been integral to numerous historical events, both in war and peace.

Key Milestones in the Indian Air Force’s Journey

The Indian Air Force began its journey with its first flight on April 1, 1933, which included six RAF-trained officers and 19 airmen flying four Westland Wapiti IIA biplanes. Since then, the IAF has grown exponentially, playing a pivotal role in four wars with Pakistan—1947-48, 1965, 1971, and 1999 (Kargil War). It was also instrumental in incorporating Goa into India in 1961 and provided critical support during the 1962 war with China. The IAF's involvement in the capture of the Siachen Glacier in 1984 and its role in thwarting an attempted coup in the Maldives in 1988 further demonstrate its prowess. The IAF has played a crucial role in various rescue and relief operations during natural disasters and crises abroad. It has also worked closely with ISRO, contributing to space exploration missions. Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel to space in 1984, was an IAF pilot, adding to the air force's storied history.

IAF 2024 Theme: Potent, Powerful, and Self-Reliant

This year, the IAF celebrates its 92nd anniversary under the theme “Bhartiya Vayu Sena – Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar” (Potent, Powerful, and Self-Reliant), emphasizing its commitment to becoming a force that can independently defend India’s skies.

2024 IAF Airshow in Chennai: 4 die, 96 hospitalised on account of heatstroke after 92nd Air Force Day event on Marina Beach, Chennai.

However, the celebratory atmosphere of Indian Air Force Day 2024 was overshadowed by tragedy. The IAF’s 92nd anniversary airshow, held at Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach, turned catastrophic when a crowd of over 12 lakh surged toward exits, leading to chaos. The mass exodus left five dead and over 200 people hospitalized, most due to dehydration and overcrowding.

The event, intended to showcase the strength and precision of the Indian Air Force, ended in disarray as organizers were overwhelmed by the sheer number of attendees. Attendees reported insufficient drinking water, lack of proper facilities, and a complete breakdown of transportation services, which left many stranded for hours. Authorities confirmed that the fatalities resulted from heart attacks and exhaustion caused by the heat and congestion.

Political Fallout
The tragic incident has sparked a political blame game, with the opposition BJP accusing the ruling DMK government of negligence. BJP leaders have pointed fingers at Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, criticizing the state government for its failure to ensure adequate safety measures and facilities for such a large gathering. In response, the DMK has defended itself, stating that provisions were made for toilets, drinking water, and ambulances but were overwhelmed by the unexpectedly large crowd.

The presence of both Tamil Nadu CM Stalin and Deputy CM Udhayanidhi at the airshow during the crisis has further fueled political tensions, with both parties engaged in a war of words, trying to shift responsibility for the mishap.

A Somber Reminder
The tragedy at Marina Beach underscores the importance of proper event planning and crowd management. While Indian Air Force Day is a time to honour the valor and dedication of the IAF, this year’s celebrations will be remembered for the tragic loss of lives and the chaos that unfolded. It serves as a sobering reminder that public safety must always be a priority, especially at large-scale public events.
