New Delhi:- Legacy processors from Intel, AMD, or Nvidia have known limitations in terms of speed, energy efficiency, and electromagnetic interference. For example, core chipmakers such as TSMC and Samsung are now racing to convert to 3nm processes for customers such as Apple and Nvidia.

Photonics, meanwhile, is becoming a growth area as chip makers seek faster solutions. Unlike electrons, the wavelengths of light do not interact, so parallel streams of data can be created within the chip. The global photonics market size is estimated at US$630 billion in 2021, and is expected to reach US$1,100 trillion by 2030, for example. Akhetonics, an all-optical processor startup, believes it has the answer.

Led by deep tech investor Runa Capital, it has now raised €2.3 million in early stage funding. Other investors include Interface Capital, Rheingau Founders, Thomas Pirschke (Co-founder of Trade Republic) and Marie Tai (President of Possible Ventures).

Akhetonics claims to have several phototransistor prototypes and the basis for processor designs.

Competitors include Lightmatter, Lightelligence and Optalysys. The Berlin-based start-up says its all-optical processors offer higher bandwidth, faster speeds, and higher efficiency and information density than electronic processors.

The company aims to develop a fully optical CPU with a full prototype by 2024.

“Our mission at Akhetonics is to develop an entirely new computing technology: the world's first all-optical general-purpose CPU. ,” Akhetonics CEO Michael Kissner said in a statement. “The funds raised will play a key role in enabling us to realize our vision, accelerate our research and development efforts, and incorporate our breakthrough technologies into our first products.”

Dmitry Galperin, general partner of his Berlin-based Runa Capital, added that “We see great opportunities in his Akhetonics innovative approach to all-optical processing. Their technology has the potential to revolutionize multiple areas, from high-performance networking and security hardware to quantum computing. ”
