AMARANTH: A cloudburst was reported close to the holy Amarnath Shrine, resulting in the deaths of two persons, following heavy rains in the region on Friday. At around 5.30 pm, the cloudburst struck close to the sacred shrine's base camp, officials said. The national and state disaster response forces are carrying out rescue operations, said IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar.

According to officials, five people's bodies have so far been found, three of them were women. A cloud burst was visible in the Amarnath cave's lower sections. The injured are being airlifted for treatment. The situation, however, is under control, official added.

The Joint Police Control Room in Pahalgam has reported that a rescue effort is being carried out by the NDRF, SDRF, and other related organisations. After torrential rains in the upper sections, water entered the cave from above. For now, the rain has ceased. The cloudburst had an impact on some of the langars at the Amarnath sanctuary. The injured are taken to safety by helicopter.

The authorities announced on Wednesday, July 6, that with some improvement in the weather conditions along both routes, Amarnath Yatra will be resumed for the day.

Earlier, due to bad weather along both Baltal and Pahalgam routes, no movement of pilgrims was permitted from either side towards the cave shrine and the pilgrims were not allowed to move towards the Valley from Jammu.
