WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will impose a new 10 percent tariff (import tariff) on products imported from China worth $300 billion, which will be applied from September 1. The decision has further boosted the trade war between the two countries. "Our representatives have just returned from China," Trump tweeted on Thursday. There he had constructive talks regarding a future trade contract. We thought we had a deal with China three months ago, but sadly China decided to renegotiate the deal before signing," he said.

Trump wrote, "Trade negotiations are ongoing and during the negotiations, the U.S. will impose a small additional fee of 10 percent on the remaining 300 billion dollars on products coming from China on September 1. It excludes tariffs already imposed on goods worth $250 billion. Smartphones are expected to cover clothing.

A team headed by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin held talks with a high-level Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier Liu Yandong in Shanghai on Tuesday and Wednesday, after which Trump's announcement came out.  The White House said there was no agreement in the latest round of trade talks, but the talks remained positive.
