New Delhi: The US Navy has handed over two MH-60R multi-role helicopters (MRH) to the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy is buying 24 helicopters manufactured by Lockheed Martin from the US government under foreign military sales at an estimated cost of USD 2.4 billion. A programme was held at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego on Friday, marking the formal transfer of helicopters from the US Navy to the Indian Navy. The event was attended by India's Ambassador Taranjeet Singh Sandhu.

The programme completed the process of papers between Vice Admiral Kenneth Whitesel, Commander Naval Air Forces, US Navy and Vice Admiral Ravneet Singh, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. The event was also attended by the senior leadership of the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Indian Ambassador Taranjeet Singh Sandhu said India-US friendship is skyrocketing.

He said bilateral defence trade has increased to more than $20 billion in the last few years. He said that moving beyond defence trade, India and the US are also working together on the production and co-development of defence platforms.
