New Delhi: The prices of American dairy products may come down in the Indian market. The inter-ministerial committee of secretaries will consider the matter next week. Under this, it is proposed to give relief in import duty on products like dairy products, medical devices and walnuts. According to sources in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, this step is to be taken as part of negotiations to speed up bilateral trade between India and the US.
It may be decided by the US to make some Indian products easier to market. The US is said to be able to resume duty relief under the Generalized System of Preference (GSP). Apart from some products in the region, it is proposed to reduce the rate of import duty on apples and walnuts.
Apart from this, the Commerce Ministry has also proposed a reduction in import duty on pulses, on which the opinion of the Ministry of Agriculture has been sought. According to sources, it is also proposed to reduce the rate of import duty on frozen chicken and bourbon whiskey imported from the US. It is proposed to reduce the rate of import duty on apple from 50 per cent to 10 per cent and on nut from 100 per cent to ten per cent. A meeting is likely to be held on Monday on this issue.
