Seoul: South Korea and the United States are looking to hold their first significant joint live-fire demonstration in six years in 2023, Seoul's defense ministry announced on Thursday, in light of growing military threats from North Korea.

The exercise was raised as South Korea and the US discussed plans for the 70th anniversary of the alliance next year, according to ministry spokesman Jeon Ha-gyu.

"To mark that occasion, we are exploring various ways to highlight our military presence and the Live-fire performance coalition's overwhelming deterrence capabilities against North Korea," Jeon said at a regular briefing.

For the first time since 2018, the United States and South Korea conducted joint military exercises on Tuesday using F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets. This came shortly after North Korea criticized both countries and threatened to conduct additional missile tests.

The Allies conducted their first joint training since last year with a US aircraft carrier in September. These exercises were halted under Yoon's predecessor Moon Jae-in, who prioritized relations with the North, which saw them as an invasion exercise and condemned them.

This year, North Korea conducted an unprecedented number of missile tests, including ICBMs that could reach the US mainland. Additionally, it has completed preparations for its first nuclear test since 2017, according to officials in Seoul and Washington.
