For the first time in 45 years, India received a silver medal in the men's category at the World Championships started in 1974. India had so far won only the bronze medal in the World Championship. In 2017, when he went to Hamburg, Germany for the first time to participate in the World Championship, he liked a particular shoe at a shop there. These shoes were especially worn for boxing. Though it was not in Panghal's capacity to pay his price, he liked the shoes so much that he could not stop himself. In such a situation, he made up his mind to borrow. He bought these shoes by borrowing from fellow boxer Kavindra Bisht.
