Srinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a significant meeting in Delhi on Sunday to address the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir following recent terror attacks in the region. During the session, Shah was anticipated to outline comprehensive directives aimed at bolstering counter-terrorism operations, as per sources familiar with the matter.

Attending the meeting were National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief-designate Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Director General of CRPF Anish Dayal Singh, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police RR Swain, and other senior security officials. The Home Minister also oversaw preparations for the upcoming annual Amarnath pilgrimage, slated to commence on June 29.

Shah was briefed on the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, including troop deployments along the International Border and Line of Control, infiltration activities, ongoing anti-terror operations, and the presence of terrorist elements in the Union Territory, according to report. In recent days, terrorist incidents occurred in Reasi, Kathua, and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the loss of nine pilgrims and a CRPF jawan, with several security personnel and civilians sustaining injuries.

Additionally, two suspected Pakistani terrorists were neutralized in an encounter in Kathua district, with a significant cache of arms and ammunition recovered from them. These developments precede the commencement of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, which draws hundreds of thousands of devotees to the cave shrine nestled in the south Kashmir Himalayas. Last year, over 4.28 lakh pilgrims visited the shrine, with expectations of an even higher turnout this year.

Stringent measures are being implemented for the safety of pilgrims, including the issuance of RFID cards for real-time tracking, and insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh for each pilgrim and Rs 50,000 for animals accompanying them. Shah emphasized the importance of seamless transportation arrangements from airports and railway stations to the pilgrimage base camp, along with ensuring the security of all pilgrims.
