Srinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today rejected requests from local political parties in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and turned down their offer to hold talks with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. During a rally in north Kashmir this week, Amit Shah said that "People who ruled Jammu and Kashmir for 70 years are saying that we should talk with Pakistan. Why should we talk to Pakistan? We will not talk. We will talk to the people of Baramulla. We will talk to the people of Kashmir.''

In this way, the Government of India has once again refused to talk to Pakistan. In 2019, US President Donald Trump offered to mediate between the two countries on the issue of Kashmir. The refusal to hold talks with Pakistan is a major setback for regional parties like the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which have been requesting the central government to hold talks with Islamabad on the Kashmir issue.

With his statement, Amit Shah reiterated the change in New Delhi's policy. The central government believes that the sole purpose of holding talks with Pakistan is to talk about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The new policy marginalises the 'soft separatist' narrative run by traditional political parties and creates a new political one that is pushing a 'nationalist narrative' on Kashmir. This section believes that Pakistan has no role in Kashmir.
