Furious protests in the northeast, including Assam, against the Citizenship Amendment Act, seem to be halting. But, there are repeated reports of protests and violence in West Bengal. On Saturday, protesters set fire to 25 buses, while three railway stations, five trains, and 20 shops were set on fire. For this reason, 78 trains, including 28 expresses, had to be canceled. On one hand, the Railways have run special trains from Guwahati to evacuate people trapped in the Northeast including Assam. So far, 2400 passengers have been evacuated, while 800 are yet to be evacuated. These 800 people are stranded in Guwahati. Curfew has been relaxed in Guwahati from 9 am to 6 pm. Apart from this, Deputy Commissioner of Dibrugarh Pallava Gopal Jha said on Sunday that curfew in Dibrugarh (Assam) has been relaxed from 7 am to 4 pm today.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah has indicated changes in the law. During an election rally in Jharkhand on Saturday, Home Minister Shah said that he might consider the issue after Christmas. Shah assured the people of the Northeast that their culture, language, social identity and political rights would not be affected by the act. The Home Minister said, "I want to assure the people of Assam and other states of the Northeast that their culture, social identity, language, political rights will not be touched and the Narendra Modi government will protect them." Shah said Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad Sangma and his government ministers met him on Friday to discuss the issue. The Home Minister said, "He said that there is a problem in Meghalaya. I tried to convince them that there was no issue. Even after that, he asked me (in-law) to make some changes.
