Two catholic nuns and their two novices were heckled and forced to get off a train in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, on suspicion of religious conversion and allowed to proceed only after an inquiry at the railway station established there was no conversion involved. The ABVP is the student's wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological mentor of the BJP.
The incident, which took place on Friday, has generated outrage, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan writing to Home Minister Amit Shah asking for strict action.
Amit Shah said today, "Those participating in the incident of harassment of Jhansi nuns will be brought before the law." He added, "This is a disgrace to the country, and to its previous culture of faith. These events require the government to be the most decisive. I urge you to intervene. Good for instructing the police to be kind to all groups, involving individuals, to intervene. The president wrote”
Two catholic nuns, along with two of their postulants, were travelling from Delhi to Odisha on 19th March 2021 by train. The nuns were in their religious dress and the postulants were in casuals. When the train was about to reach Jhansi station some of the Bajrang Dal activists who were returning from their pilgrimage, started to question the nuns about their religion and faith and alleged that the postulants were being taken for religious conversion to Christianity. The postulants stated that they are Christians by their birth, and nobody has taken them for conversion. But they turned a deaf ear to them.
