NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a crucial meeting on Saturday, March 1, to assess the security situation in Manipur.
This comes after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9 amid ongoing violence and political turmoil that has gripped the state for nearly two years.
Just days later, on February 13, President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur following a report from the state governor. According to an official notification published in the Gazette of India by the Union Home Ministry, all powers of the Manipur Legislative Assembly have now been transferred to Parliament, effectively suspending the state government’s authority.
Last November, Amit Shah had already held a high-level review meeting in Delhi with top officials to take stock of the security situation in Manipur. During those discussions, officials provided a detailed assessment of the challenges on the ground and the steps being taken to address them. The meeting highlighted the central government’s focus on stabilizing the region and ensuring public safety.
As part of his review, Shah also examined the security deployment in Manipur, instructing Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police officials to maintain law and order.
The unrest in Manipur began on May 3 last year, following violent clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU). The protest was against the demand for the Meitei community to be granted Scheduled Tribe status.
On November 11, Manipur Police reported that 10 suspected militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with security forces. The clash erupted after insurgents, dressed in camouflage and armed with advanced weapons, launched an indiscriminate attack on the Borobekra police station and a nearby CRPF camp in Jakuradhor, Jiribam district.Â
Later that day, suspected militants allegedly abducted six civilians, including women and children, from the same district.Â
In response to the escalating violence, the Union Home Ministry announced on Saturday that all security forces deployed in Manipur have been instructed to take necessary steps to restore peace and order in the state.Â
