Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks, was a 1994 blockbuster at the movie office. In a recent interview, Tom disclosed that, for barely 40 minutes, a movie sequel had been a real possibility. Recently, Laal Singh Chaddha, a remake of Forrest Gump in Hindi, came out.
Tom recently mentioned on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, “I will say that, with a long time in between, we did take a stab at talking about another Forrest Gump that lasted all of 40 minutes. And then we never...we said, 'Guys, come on.' A smart thing I did is I've never signed a contract that had a contractual obligation to a sequel. I've always said, 'Guys, if there's a reason to do it, let's do it. But you guys can't force me.' There is that natural inclination that is one of pure commerce that says, 'Hey, you just had a hit, so do it again and you'll have a hit.”
The 1986 novel, which inspired the 1995 book sequel "Gump and Co," served as the basis for the Oscar-winning play. The first book's movie adaptation was a box office smash, grossing $678 million globally and topping the charts in the United States in 1994. Tom received the best actor Oscar, and the movie also took home four additional Oscars including the best picture award.
Despite the movie's popularity and Oscar victory, Tom and the filmmaker Robert Zemeckis never really considered making a sequel. Due to the actor's infrequent hearing of a solid enough idea to justify a return to one of his roles, Tom's career has not been rife with sequels, according to Variety.
The Hindi version of the movie, Laal Singh Chaddha, was released last month. Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Mona Singh all acted in the movie.
