Anand Bakshi's father was a bank manager in Rawalpindi. As a teenager, Anand joined the army as a telephone operator. But the dream of coming to Bombay (Mumbai) and the world of films kept him tied to it. After the partition, Anand's family came to India as refugees. When nothing happened in Mayanagari, Anand Bakshi rejoined the army and continued to work there for some time. After serving in the army for 3 years, he determined that his life's purpose was to write songs, not to shoot guns. He got the opportunity to write songs for the first time in 1957 but success was not achieved. In 1963, actor and director Raj Kapoor offered him a chance to write the song for his film 'Mehndi Lage Mere Haath.' Thereafter, success never left Anand Bakshi's side.
