On the first day of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, Indian star Vishwanathan Anand drew a draw from China's Ding Liran on Friday and then won over Wesley Soo of America but lost to Russia's Ian Nepomaniacchi in the third game. World champion Magnus Carlson was ahead of his rivals by playing two wins and one wicket draw and ended the day with five points. In every rapid game, a win would earn two points and a draw would earn one point.

Hikaru Nakamura of America is in second place with four points. Anand is jointly at the third position, along with Holland's Anish Giri, Ding Liran and compatriots Vidit Gujarati and P Harikrishna. The efforts of Harikrishna and Gujarati were brilliant, who did not give up and drew all three bets. Levon Aronian of Armenia, Wesley Soe and Nepomaniacci are eighth by two points each.

Six rounds are yet to be played in the rapid section of this super tournament. After this, the Blitz tournament will start which will last for 18 rounds. The total prize money of this tournament is more than one crore rupees. Anand got off to a good start, first scoring points with Ding Liran playing with black pieces and then being able to defeat arch rival Weslow So. But he was defeated in front of Napomaniacci's tricks, taking his total to three points. Anand will have to be at least sixth here to qualify for the Grand Finale to be held in London.
