NEW DELHI: Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek for quick clearance of the revised cost estimate for the Polavaram irrigation project on the Godavari river.

The chief minister then made President Droupadi Murmu a courtesy visit. The chief minister discussed the Polavaram project with Modi during their 40-minute meeting, according to official sources, and also asked for approval of the proposed Bhogapuram airport in the Vizianagaram district, the establishment of medical colleges, and the release of funds under various central programmes to the state government.

The state government is unable to move the rehabilitation and resettlement works forward due to the high cost, thus the chief minister has been demanding approval of the irrigation project's revised cost estimate of Rs 55,548 crore. The Polavaram irrigation project, which intends to irrigate 2.91 lakh hectares, create 960 megawatts of power, and meet the water demands of industries and 540 villages in Andhra Pradesh, had an earlier projected cost of Rs 35,000 crore.

The chief minister, who is on a two-day visit to the nation's capital, will probably speak about the situation of Andhra Pradesh's power revenue deficit and unpaid debts Telangana owes to the state government when he meets with the union power minister later in the day.
