Visakhapatnam: The donkeys have been placed on the list of animals that are going extinct in the country. If the population of donkeys does not increase soon, this animal may disappear completely from many states. The reason behind the death of donkeys is to kill them for meat. According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), donkeys are not registered as 'food animals'. It is illegal to kill them. In Andhra Pradesh, donkeys have reached the point of extinction. Here, their remains are being thrown into the canals after killing donkeys. This poses a threat to the health of the people.

The meat of donkeys is being sold in the market at the rate of about 600 rupees per kg. Meat sellers are paying 15 to 20 thousand rupees to buy a donkey. In such a situation, donkeys are being cut indiscriminately for meat. To curb this has become a major challenge for the state government. In India, many people use donkey meat for food. At the same time, in Andhra Pradesh, there are many assumptions about the meat of donkeys. People here believe that donkey meat can overcome many problems. They say that eating donkey meat can relieve shortness of breath. They also believe that eating donkey meat also increases sexual stamina. Due to these perceptions, people are using donkey meat as food. Donkeys are being killed in many districts including West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. These include many other areas including Krishna, Prakasam, and Guntur. Their meat consumption has increased very fast here.

Secretary of Animal Rescue Organization Gopal R. Surbathula says that there is a serious crisis on the existence of donkeys. The donkeys have almost disappeared from the state. They are being killed unlawfully under the Rules of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. This is against the local municipal act as well as the directions of the apex court.
