NEW DELHI: Anil Khanna, a veteran sports administrator, resigned as the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) acting president on Wednesday, saying he respects the views of the International Olympic Committee.
On September 8, the IOC threatened to suspend IOA and refused to recognise any "acting/interim president," saying that the organisation must hold elections by the end of the year.
Following the termination of Narinder Batra's leadership of the nation's top sports organisation by a court decision, Khanna assumed control of the Indian Olympic Association. "I've had the honour of participating in the IOA sports fraternity for many years and serving in a variety of roles. Being a part of the Commonwealth Games, where India performed exceptionally well, as Acting President was an honour for me "In a letter, Khanna stated.
"I temporarily assumed the President's responsibilities in accordance with the IOA Constitution, which the General House unanimously authorised, and in light of a previous instance in which the position of President was vacant in 2011. On June 24, 2022, the Honorable High Court of Delhi affirmed this." he said.
It is no secret that the IOA has experienced turbulence over the past two years, and with the elections coming up in a few months as well as the Hon'ble High Court's order, which may have an impact on some of the affiliated members' futures, concerns have grown among many in our family, leading to ongoing litigation even over the past few weeks. "On constitutional issues, such as how to interpret the Constitution and the role of the Interim/Acting President, various IOA factions are evidently adopting opposing stances. In their letter, IOC also said that they did not recognise any Acting or Interim President of IOA "he said.
