Mumbai: Social activist Anna Hazare has accused Maharashtra's cooperative sugar mills of selling them at "aune pawn price." He has written a letter to Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah seeking a probe into the alleged Rs 25,000-crore "scam" under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge.

In a letter to Shah, Anna Hazare has urged that a high-powered committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge be set up to probe the alleged scam. Hazare wrote in his letter, "Since 2009, we have been protesting against the sale of sugar mills at throwaway prices and irregularities in cooperative financial institutions. In 2017, we lodged a complaint in Mumbai and a DIG-level officer was appointed to investigate it." He said, adding that after two years, a closure report was filed, stating that no irregularities had been found.

"If the Maharashtra government does not take action against the Rs 25,000 crore scam, who will take action?" He said the Centre has set up a ministry of cooperation for the welfare of farmers and for the betterment of the cooperative sector. "We believe that this would be a better example if the Central government conducts a high-level inquiry into the sale of sugar mills in Maharashtra," he said. Adding that Hazare, however, did not name any cooperative sugar mill in his letter.
