COIMBATORE: This Sunday, January 8, the 11th Coimbatore Bird Race will take place in Coimbatore , and bird watchers from the city will head out in quest of birds.

The Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), the Salim Ali Naturalist Forum (SANF), and the organisation are working together to organise this programme in conjunction with HSBC, according to P. Pramod, Senior Principal Scientist at SACON (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited). The Yuhina Canopy in Mumbai serves as the India Bird Races' national coordinator.

With the participation of thousands of people annually from December to early March in more than a dozen Indian towns, the bird race has grown to be a national occasion.

Teams of bird watchers will spend the entire day spotting and identifying birds to record as many different species as they can. This is a dawn-to-dusk event. The next step is an interactive gathering where all participants can talk to other teams and the organisers about their days' experiences.

The bird races are conceptualized to help study lives of birds in urban areas and to understand various aspects of biodiversity and environment around them. Birds are often the foremost attraction for people trying to understand urban biodiversity.
