May 21 in India is celebrated as Anti-Terrorism Day every year. The child of India cannot forget this day because it was on this day that India's youngest PM Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated and terrorism was completely involved in the murder of him which is why it was decided since his assassination that this day is celebrated as Anti-Terrorism Day.

What happened that day?: On May 21, 1997, Rajiv Gandhi had gone to Sriperumbudur, a place in Tamil Nadu, to attend a rally. A woman who was also a member of a terrorist group of liberation tigers of Tamil Eelam came before them. There were explosives under her clothes and she contacted the Prime Minister and said she wanted to touch their feet. As soon as she started touching her feet, a sudden bomb exploded killing the PM and 25 people on the spot.

Anti-terrorism pledge is taken: The official announcement to celebrate National Anti-Terrorism Day was made by former India PM V P Singh. Since the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, this day has been celebrated in the same way every year. On this day, anti-terrorism pledges are taken in all government offices and public institutions. Children in schools are especially made aware of this.

Purpose of celebrating: The main purpose of celebrating it is to keep humanity alive among the people. To inform people about terrorist groups from time to time and to further increase awareness among them. To give the right direction to the youth so that they have forgotten to become part of various terrorist groups in any greed. The day is celebrated with the objective of not allowing the country, society and individuals to fall under the shadow of terrorism.

How is it celebrated?: Former PM Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on the day of anti-terrorism day so tributes are paid to him at many places on this day. Large scale education programmes are organized to highlight terrorism and its ill effects. People are also made aware by holding rallies on this day. All programmes are being conducted online during the Covid period. In many government institutions, two minutes of silence is also observed on the death of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
