Mumbai: Anushree Mehta, known for her work on the film 'Mrs Undercover', is gearing up to helm the remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's timeless classic 'Bawarchi', which originally starred Rajesh Khanna.

This project marks a collaboration between Jaadugar Films and Sameer Raj Sippy Productions, aiming to recreate three iconic movies from the past. Alongside 'Bawarchi', they will also revamp 'Mili' (1975), starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, and Gulzar's 1972 drama 'Koshish'.

Mehta, who is also producing alongside Abir Sengupta under Jaadugar Films, expressed her excitement and honor in directing this film, promising a modern-day adaptation of the beloved classic.

"When Abir Sengupta, Sameer Raj Sippy, and I decided to embark on remaking these three iconic films, we were determined to do so with utmost love and respect. During our discussions regarding 'Bawarchi', Abir and Sameer suggested that I take on the role of writer and director for the remake."

"They were confident that I could retell the story in a manner that would make them proud. Our visions aligned perfectly, and I enthusiastically agreed to take on the role of writer-director," Mehta stated.

Originally released in 1972, 'Bawarchi' starred the late Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bachchan in leading roles. The plot centered around the Sharma family, a middle-class household in dire need of a servant, finding solace in the exuberant and multi-talented Raghu (Khanna).

With supporting cast including Asrani, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, AK Hangal, and Durga Khote, 'Bawarchi' was a remake of the 1966 Bengali film 'Galpo Holeo Satti' by Tapan Sinha.

Mehta assured that the adaptation will resonate with modern audiences, aiming to retain the essence of the original while making it relevant to today's world.

"The essence of retelling a film lies in adapting it to contemporary times and ensuring it resonates with today's audience—while preserving the essence and purpose of the original. Just as Hrishida recreated 'Bawarchi' to suit his era, my goal is to do the same for today's generation."

"I intend to retell the timeless story of 'Bawarchi' in a way that appeals to family audiences of all ages. My aim is to create an unforgettable and wholesome family experience," she added.
