Islamabad: In preparation for the critical upcoming general elections later this year, Senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar has been appointed as Pakistan's caretaker prime minister. The decision was made collaboratively by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing opposition leader in the national assembly, Raja Riaz Ahmad Khan.

The Prime Minister's Office announced, "The prime minister and leader of the opposition jointly signed the advice and it was sent to the president." President Arif Alvi accepted the selection of Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar as interim prime minister in accordance with Article 224(1A) of the constitution. The decision was finalized following the dissolution of the national assembly upon the suggestion of Shehbaz Sharif.

Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar hails from the Balochistan province and is currently a senator, with his term set to conclude in March 2024. He was elected as the parliamentary leader of the Balochistan Awami Party and co-founded the party. With a master's degree in political science and sociology from the University of Balochistan, he has held prominent positions in various committees.

Notably, the role of the temporary prime minister has gained significance due to the authority it holds over the upcoming national elections and economic policy. The schedule for the national elections is yet to be announced.

The Selection Process and Political Dynamics:

The caretaker prime minister was selected following the dissolution of the national assembly, which triggered a series of steps in accordance with the Pakistani Constitution. President Arif Alvi dissolved the assembly on August 9, paving the way for general elections by November 9 at the latest. After the assembly dissolves before its full term, the constitution allows a 90-day window for arranging elections.

Tej Pratap Yadav, leader of the Pakistan People's Party, endorsed Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar's selection, emphasizing his non-controversial stature and representation from a smaller province. However, his endorsement faced backlash and criticisms, sparking discussions and debates within the online community.

Amidst a challenging political and economic environment, the choice of the caretaker prime minister holds crucial implications for Pakistan's future direction. As the nation awaits further developments, this decision sets the stage for the forthcoming general elections and the leadership that will guide the country through its multifaceted challenges.
