Apple has become the single largest creator of blue-collar jobs in the electronics segment after having generated one Lakh new direct jobs in the past 19 months.

Since the PLI plan went into action in August 2021, 19 months have passed during which the great majority of this new employment have been generated.

60% of the new employment have been created by the three companies that assemble the iPhone: Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron, and Wistron. With over 7,000 new employment, they have already surpassed their second-year promise under the programme to create new jobs.

There is still one month left in the fiscal year, and it is anticipated that a few thousand additional employment will be created. The ecosystem surrounding Apple, which includes component and charger suppliers, has produced the remaining jobs. These suppliers, which include companies like Tata Electronics, Salcomp, Avary, Foxlink, Sunwoda, and Jabil, have created an extra 40,000 jobs.

The information is based on the three vendors and the businesses in the Apple ecosystem that are obligated to submit employment data to the government on a regular basis.

Foxconn Hon Hai, situated in Tamil Nadu and producing just iPhones, has added the most jobs--over 35,500, or more than a third--of the 100,000 new positions.

Pegatron, which only began producing this fiscal year but has already surpassed other employers in Tamil Nadu with 14,000 employees, is another.

Karnataka-based Wistron has created 12,800 employees.

A question on these employment figures was not answered by a spokeswoman for Apple Inc.

According to source, Tatas Electronics, Apple's primary component supplier for mechanical parts, has employed a sizable workforce throughout the supply chain. Salcomp, which employs over 11,000 people, as well as Jabil, Foxlink, and Sunwoda are the further contributors.

A government news statement from October 6, 2020 stated that it anticipated the smartphone PLI programme would result in the creation of 200,000 direct jobs overall over the course of five years.

It is evident that the industry, mostly under the leadership of the Apple ecosystem, is well on its way to reaching the goal.
Also, according to government estimates, the manufacturing of electronics generates approximately three times as many indirect jobs as it does direct jobs. According to this assessment, the Apple ecosystem is responsible for close to 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Over a period of seven years, mobile device manufacturers and their suppliers are estimated to have directly and indirectly produced over two million jobs, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association.

In December 2022, Apple becomes the first firm to export more than $1 billion worth of iPhones in a single month. In the nine months from April to December 2022, it exported more than Rs 30,000 crore, or almost 40% of the nation's total smartphone exports in terms of value.
