Apple has set up a secretive AI lab in Zurich, Switzerland, hiring 36 experts who used to work for Google. This lab, called the "Vision Lab," is focused on creating advanced AI models and products, especially in text and visual-based AI systems similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Since 2018, Apple has been recruiting specialists from Google, especially after hiring John Giannandrea, who used to lead AI at Google, as their top AI executive. The Zurich lab has also attracted other AI experts, including former Google employees like Bengio and Ruoming Pang.

Although Apple's main AI development centers are in California and Seattle, the Zurich lab shows the company's growing commitment to AI. The report suggests that Apple's interest in establishing this lab in Switzerland might be fueled by their acquisitions of AI startups like FaceShift (virtual reality) and Fashwall (image recognition).

While tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Samsung have made significant strides in AI, Apple has been slower to enter the field. Ruslan Salakhutdinov from Carnegie Mellon University, who has connections to Apple, suggests that Apple's cautious approach to AI development might be the reason for the delay. They are careful about releasing AI systems without full control over them.

Apple's AI ambitions might become evident in the next iOS 18 update, which is expected to introduce generative AI features to various applications like Siri, Spotlight, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Keynote, Numbers, and Pages. These features will likely be powered by on-device large language models (LLMs).

Details about Apple's Vision Lab in Zurich are still unknown, but the hiring of top talent and acquisitions in the AI space indicate a significant push toward advanced AI technology. Apple's careful approach to AI development could lead to new innovations in the future.
