California-based Apple has introduced an upgraded version of its Game Porting Toolkit, aimed at making it easier to bring Windows games to macOS and now iOS, according to 9To5Mac. Initially launched last year to help adapt Windows games for macOS, this toolkit has already facilitated the transition of several high-profile games to the Mac. The latest version, Game Porting Toolkit 2.0, now extends its capabilities to include iPhones and iPads.
Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit offers a powerful framework for converting Windows games into native macOS applications. Developers can use this tool to determine the feasibility of porting their games to Mac, followed by detailed optimizations for macOS. A standout feature of the toolkit is its ability to translate DirectX graphics to Metal, Apple’s graphics API.
Beyond graphics translation, the toolkit also helps developers utilize various built-in system features, such as game controller support, Spatial Audio, and HDR video capabilities.
With the release of macOS Sequoia, Apple has enhanced the Game Porting Toolkit with improved graphics performance, expanded software compatibility, and support for advanced features like ray tracing on compatible hardware and the AVX2 instruction set.
The most significant advancement in Game Porting Toolkit 2.0 is its new support for iOS 18. During a session at WWDC 2024, Apple explained how developers can now port a Windows game to macOS and then easily transition it to iPhone and iPad.
Once a game is optimized for macOS, moving it to iOS becomes straightforward due to the shared SDK. Features such as game controller support and graphics rendering are consistent across platforms. For example, haptic feedback for game controllers can be seamlessly integrated with the iPhone’s Haptic Engine using the same API.
