Gangtok: A major road accident has taken place in Sikkim. Here on Friday, a bus fell into a deep gorge, and 16 army soldiers were martyred in this accident. A crowd has gathered at the spot. Relief and rescue work has been started on the spot. The accident occurred in the Gema area, 15 km from Lachen in North Sikkim.

According to the information received, three army vehicles were carrying soldiers in the morning. This convoy was going from Chatan toward Thangu. On the way to Jemaa, the driver of a vehicle suddenly lost control due to a steep slope at the turn and the vehicle fell into the gorge below. On receiving the news, the local police officers reached and the rescue operation was started. It is said that 4 injured soldiers were rescued. While three junior commissioned officers and 13 jawans succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.

The Indian Army has issued a statement on the accident and said that it stands with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Every possible help will be given to the family. An army officer said that the army vehicle involved in the accident was part of a convoy of three vehicles going from Chaten to Thangu in North Sikkim. Rescue has been done on the spot. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has also expressed grief by tweeting. He said- Deeply saddened by the loss of lives of soldiers of the Indian Army in a road accident in North Sikkim. The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured.
